A Nostalgic Nightmare: Beetlejuice is Back and Better Than Ever

By Kyle Arjoonsingh

Tim Burton's long-awaited sequel “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” invites audiences back into the whimsically dark universe of the 1988 classic. Packed with over-the-top humor and a stellar cast, this film is an essential viewing experience for fans of the original and newcomers alike.

Set 36 years after the events of the first film, we find Lydia Deetz, now a widowed professional medium, returning to her haunted home following the death of her stepmother's husband. It’s here that she encounters Beetlejuice, who has resurfaced from the afterlife and is caught up in yet another chaotic scenario.

Beetlejuice has always held a special place in the hearts of many. When news of the sequel broke, fans, including myself, felt a wave of skepticism. Recent years have seen numerous sequels and remakes fail to recapture the magic of their originals. However, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” rises to this challenge remarkably well.

Combining elements of horror, comedy and even musical interludes, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” takes viewers on a wild ride… and I do mean wild. Familiar characters from the original film make their return, with Michael Keaton donning his iconic green hair and striped suit alongside Winona Ryder, who reprises her role as the now-adult Lydia. The supporting cast also includes Jenna Ortega, a familiar face in modern-day Halloween entertainment, and Catherine O'Hara.

You don’t need to have seen the original to enjoy the film, but be prepared for some sporadic references that might be confusing to a first-time “Beetlejuice” viewer. The sequel nods to its predecessor through in-jokes and callbacks that longtime fans will appreciate.

With visually stunning sets, elaborate costumes and refreshing practical effects, Burton's signature style is on full display. Although the pacing can sometimes feel uneven and the plot a tad bit oversaturated – these minor flaws are easily overshadowed by the sheer enjoyment and nostalgia the film offers.

One of the standout aspects of the film is Beetlejuice himself. Keaton delivers a performance that is as lively and entertaining as ever, slipping seamlessly back into the role of the chaotic demon that many fell in love with nearly four decades ago. Meanwhile, Ryder portrays Lydia in a brand-new light, grappling with the complexities of her past – yet is just as charming.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is more than just a sequel; it’s a love letter to the original. The film pays homage to the classics while also carving out its own unique identity. With its PG-13 rating, it strikes a balance, blending humor, horror and heart into a cinematic experience that's sure to leave a lasting impression. The movie is weird, but not in a way that alienates; rather, it celebrates the quirky charm that fans have come to adore. I would give this film a solid 4 out of 5 stars.

It is now available for streaming on most digital platforms including Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+.
